Arvada Traffic Violations Attorneys in the Denver Metro Region Zealously Defending You

Helping you understand the effect of your citation

A traffic offense can cost you time in jail, hefty fines and the loss of your driver’s license. Many people believe that traffic violations are insignificant, but each charge adds up and can eventually lead to serious consequences, especially if you didn’t challenge them in court. The lawyers at The Elliott Law Offices, P.C. have vast experience in defending traffic citations. We can work to protect your driving record.

Apprising you of the legal consequences

Traffic rules are created to keep drivers safe. Therefore, when you violate one of the rules while you are driving in Colorado, there are numerous possible consequences. More important, you need to understand that if you keep getting traffic citations of any kind, the consequences get increasingly worse. If you are concerned about your driving record, it is essential to seek legal help from a qualified attorney.

The Colorado point system

Every citation you receive results in points being added to your driving record. The accrual of these points may result in large fines and severe consequences. A qualified traffic violations attorney in Arvada can discuss your accumulating points and help you determine how you can avoid getting your license suspended. These are the point totals resulting in suspension:

  • Minor drivers under 18 years of age — If you accumulate six points in any 12 consecutive months of driving, you may have your license suspended. Second offenses resulting in seven or more points before the age of 18 also results in suspension of your license.
  • Minor drivers between 18 and 21 years of age — In this age range, your license is suspended if you incur nine points within a period of 12 months. Second offenses have a limit of 12 points in 24 months, followed by 14 points for a third offense during the entire life of your license.
  • Adult drivers If you accumulate 12 points in 12 consecutive months, your license is suspended. After that, 18 points in any 24 consecutive months of driving is grounds for a second suspension.

It is important to understand that these points stay on your record for a certain period of time, which means that even after you finish the suspension period and reinstate your license, your point total may remain on your license.

Common traffic violations

Traffic violations can add up to the suspension of your driving privileges. Time periods matter, so the more spread out your violations, the better your situation. Furthermore, traffic violations vary in severity and point total. Driving 50 miles above the speed limit results in heftier points on your record than, say, rolling through a stop sign. Examples of points assigned to various traffic violations include:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol = 12 points
  • Driving while impaired by alcohol = 8 points
  • Leaving an accident scene = 12 points
  • Speed contests = 12 points
  • Evading an officer = 12 points
  • Reckless driving = 8 points
  • Careless driving = 4 points
  • Speeding 5 to 9 mph over the limit = 1 point
  • Speeding 10 to 19 mph over the limit = 4 points
  • Speeding 20 to 39 mph over the limit = 6 points

Violations and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Holders

Professional drivers who hold CDLs and are charged with a traffic violation face consequences beyond points or tickets. It is vital for CDL holders to seek help, as many employers (including a possible future employer) prefer drivers with a clean driving record. We have lots of experience working with truck drivers both from Colorado and other states.
